Employment Rights Bill: Reasoned Amendment to Second Reading
Government Bill
Work / Employment
What this vote was about
The Employment Rights Bill was the new Labour government's flagship "New Deal for Working People", introduced within its first 100 days and moved for Second Reading by the Deputy Prime Minister, Angela Rayner. Its main measures include protection from unfair dismissal from the first day of a job, new rights for people on zero-hours contracts, restrictions on "fire and rehire" practices, stronger statutory sick pay and parental leave rights, and a new Fair Work Agency to enforce workplace rights. This vote was on a reasoned amendment moved by the Conservative shadow business minister Kevin Hollinrake, which called on the House to decline to give the Bill a Second Reading. The amendment argued that the Bill had been rushed to meet an arbitrary 100-day deadline without full consultation or an adequate impact assessment, and that it would increase costs and red tape for businesses, add pressure on employment tribunals, and change trade union law. MPs rejected the amendment by 386 votes to 105, so the Bill was not blocked and the House went on to consider its Second Reading.

How many MPs voted in this division?
494 MPs have an imported recorded vote for this division. Source
What does did not vote mean on this division?
Did not vote means there is no imported Aye or No vote for that MP in this division. It does not by itself explain the reason. Source
