That this House supports the Charter for Community Rights, recognising that decades of treating the essentials of a decent life as commodities to be sold for profit rather than as public goods meant where private profit collided with well-being it was communities which lost out including through corner-cutting on housing developments or the chipping away of green spaces to increase shareholder profits; therefore declares its support for seven community rights, a right to a clean and healthy environment, a right to a healthy home, a right to play, a right to grow food on public sector land, a right to roam and swim, a right to participate in local decisions which shape communities, and a right to challenge local decisions which affect people's lives; believes these rights must be immovable and non-negotiable safeguards of the foundations of a decent life; recognises that the rapidly changing climate brings these rights into sharper focus, making it essential to climate-proof communities so that rising temperatures do not mean declining living standards; notes that these rights must precede mechanisms for a meaningful say for communities in placemaking, including over the proliferation of AI data centres; and calls on the Government to implement the Charter.
