Early Day Motion 804

Support for retired service animals

Tabled 11 September 2026 by Martin Wrigley

That this House recognises the important work service animals do in the public service sector to enable emergency services to respond and solve key incidents; believes that these animals deserve support in old age after their careers; notes the many challenges these animals face after leaving active service including issues such as the financial burden of veterinary treatment for service-related injuries and age-related conditions, inconsistent support across different services and organisations, limited recognition of the work they do in active service and the limited support for the owners and handlers who take on the financial and emotional responsibility after retirement; further believes that these animals deserve long term sustainable solutions; further recognises the work that may charities and voluntary organisations do in this sector; and calls on the Government to give greater support to service animals in their retirement and to engage with said charity and voluntary organisations.
