First female guizer jarl in Shetland’s Junior Up Helly Aa

That this House congratulates Erin Harries of Shetland for becoming the first female in history to take on the role of guizer jarl in the 2027 Junior Up Helly Aa festival; notes that Erin’s appointment marks an important moment in history for the festivals past, present and future; recognises that although the festival has been on the go since the 1950s, girls were only allowed to join in following 2023; further recognises that Erin’s election following a vote amongst young people in Shetland on Wednesday echoes the enthusiasm shown by young people around Shetland for the festival; praises them on their passion for equal participation, ensuring that all participants have the chance to contribute to the future of this ever cherished tradition; and finally wishes Erin and her squad all the best for their celebrations next January.
