Fiftieth anniversary of first Northern Ireland female police officer murdered
Tabled 1 June 2026 by Mr Gregory Campbell
That this House notes that 2 June 2026 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the murder by the Provisional IRA in Londonderry of Linda Baggley, a 19 year old Police Reservist, making her the first female police officer to be murdered in Northern Ireland, the murder was compounded by the fact that her father William Baggley, also a Police Reservist, had been murdered two years previously in the same area; understands the grief such twin acts of terrorism can bring a family, but wider society remains grateful that relative peace has been achieved through the sacrifice hundreds of security personnel such as the Baggleys have made; and calls for those political representatives who have repeatedly refused to condemn such actions to unequivocally declare such activities were wrong, should not have happened, and can in no way be justified or defended by phrases such as There Was No Alternative.
