Early Day Motion 199

Medical Training and students

Tabled 1 June 2026 by Freddie van Mierlo

That this House appreciates the contribution made by trained doctors to the NHS; understands the importance of prioritising UK medical students in NHS Foundation training programmes that is set out in the Medical Training Prioritisation Act; notes the injustice of medical students training at the Queen Mary University of London Malta campus despite having trained to identical standards have been deemed ‘overseas’ and are excluded from this prioritisation; is concerned that students trained by a British institution with British qualifications are being disadvantaged due to retrospective changes during their medical training; further notes the distress this has caused medical students in their final year applying for the NHS training programme; and therefore calls on the Government to put in an immediate transitional agreement protecting students currently enrolled at UK-accredited campuses.
