Early Day Motion 84

Responsible use of pesticides in pet flea and tick treatments

Tabled 14 May 2026 by Dr Danny Chambers

That this House expresses concern at the presence of pesticides commonly used in pet flea and tick treatments, including fipronil and imidacloprid, in UK waterways; notes that these substances pose a significant risk to aquatic ecosystems, including insects, fish, birds and wider biodiversity; recognises the importance of effective parasite control for animal health and welfare; further notes concerns that such treatments are widely available over the counter without veterinary prescription; highlights that some pet health plans may encourage routine, year-round use rather than targeted treatment based on clinical need; believes that pet owners should be provided with clear, evidence-based guidance on appropriate use; calls on the Government to promote responsible prescribing and dispensing practices, support public awareness and ensure that veterinary advice is prioritised to protect both animal health and the environment.
