That this House calls on the Government to adopt and implement the UK Curlew Action Plan; recognises that the Eurasian Curlew, one of Britain’s most iconic and culturally significant birds, has declined by approximately 65 per cent since the 1970s and is now classified as a Red Listed species; notes that the United Kingdom hosts a quarter of the world’s breeding population; further notes with sadness the recent extinction of the Slender-billed Curlew and the likely loss of the Eskimo Curlew as stark reminders of the consequences of inaction; therefore welcomes the UK Curlew Action Plan’s proposals to establish a national Curlew Recovery Taskforce, create a network of Wader Recovery Areas encompassing key breeding habitats, deliver landscape-scale land management schemes that support breeding success, address pressures on ground-nesting birds including locally appropriate predator management, ensure that development and land-use changes do not threaten core upland populations and vital ecosystem services across their habitats, and monitor and refine interventions to support long-term recovery; and believes that saving the Curlew is not only an ecological necessity but also essential to the natural and cultural heritage of the United Kingdom, so that future generations may continue to hear the wild, haunting call of this evocative bird across the fields, moors and wetlands that enrich the beauty, vibrancy and character of our country.
