That this House believes that the UK should be the safest country in the world to have a baby; regrets that 65% of maternity units do not meet the classification of good for standards of safety; recognises the serious harm caused to mothers and babies and the cost to the NHS of maternal clinical negligence claims as a result of these failings; calls on the Government to ensure that every unit in the country achieves at least a good rating of safety; urges the Government to not use Baroness Amos' review as a reason for delay when the issues in maternity care have been well-documented by previous reviews and inquires; and further urges the Government to implement Liberal Democrat calls to improve NHS maternity services, including through 24/7 consultant obstetrician cover on maternity wards, one-to-one midwifery care for every woman in labour, recruiting more consultant midwives, investing in fixing crumbling maternity and neonatal units, and a national Maternity commissioner to oversee improved standards of care.
