Early Day Motion 3009

Legal routes for refugees

Tabled 23 March 2026 by Jo White

That this House notes that the UK has an ongoing situation where far too many people are placing their lives into the hands of people smugglers and are undertaking dangerous journeys to the UK before they begin their claim; further notes that these people will travel thousands of miles, transported from country to country by organised gangs, and that the route to our shores is then either in an inflatable dingy or in the back of a lorry; believes that this patten will only end through making it illegal to claim asylum on UK shores, with claims only allowed via recognised schemes or made at processing centres based in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, where applicants remain until their claim has been processed; and further believes that the establishment of legal routes would mean that anyone using the well-worn tracks of the people smugglers will immediately be returned to the processing centre based at their nearest point of safety and that this will immediately break the model of human trafficking that is a threat to the security of our borders.
