88th anniversary of Castlecary rail disaster

That this House marks the 88th anniversary of the Castlecary rail disaster of December 1937, in which 35 people lost their lives and 179 others were injured; remembers with deep respect those who died, including many service personnel travelling home for Christmas leave, and extends its sympathies to their families and descendants; pays tribute to the emergency responders and local residents who assisted at the scene; recognises the longstanding efforts of the local community to ensure the tragedy is not forgotten, including the Castlecary Community Council and Councillor William Buchanan, who throughout his dedicated long-term service to the community has played a key role in commemorating the disaster; welcomes the memorial in Castlecary Gardens as a lasting reminder of the human cost of rail disasters; and reaffirms the importance of remembrance and continued commitment to rail safety.
