Early Day Motion 2617

Iran protests

Tabled 14 January 2026 by Calum Miller

That this House applauds the courage and resilience shown by the Iranian people in standing up to the tyrannical leaders of their country, and recognises the echoes of the bravery demonstrated following the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022 at the hands of the religious morality police; believes that the regime in Tehran lacks legitimacy in the eyes of the Iranian people; notes with grave concern the reports that thousands of protesters have been killed by regime forces and that executions are now due to take place; condemns the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) for suppressing dissent within Iran and exporting intimidation beyond its borders, including to the United Kingdom; calls on the Government to move without delay to sanction Iran’s senior leadership, including Supreme Leader Khamenei, and to proscribe the IRGC in order to ensure that Iran’s decision-makers are held to account for their attacks on peaceful protesters; further calls on the United Kingdom to take a leading role in securing justice, including by urging the United Nations Security Council to refer crimes against humanity committed by the Iranian Government against its own people to the International Criminal Court (ICC); and also calls on the Government to commit to using the United Kingdom’s satellite capabilities both to document and preserve evidence of human rights abuses, in support of an ICC investigation, and to support the restoration of internet access in Iran.
