Parliamentary screening of The Removed and historic forced adoptions

Tabled 6 January 2026 by Cat Eccles

That this House welcomes the screening of The Removed, a film that sheds light on the pain and suffering caused by historic forced adoptions in the UK, illustrating the harrowing experiences of unmarried mothers who had their babies taken from them during the 1950s to the late 1980s; notes the injustices faced by thousands of women, many of whom are now elderly; acknowledges the findings of the Joint Commission on Human Rights in 2022, which called for a formal apology from the Government to those affected; urges the UK Government to issue a long-overdue apology without delay; advocates for the implementation of restorative measures, including support for those seeking information about their past, access to trauma-informed counselling, and assistance in reuniting families separated for decades; and recognises the need to confront this painful legacy and provide necessary support to those who still feel its impact today, and begin to address the injustices of the past and foster healing within our society.
