Early Day Motion 2532

UN Convention on the Rights of Older Persons

Tabled 18 December 2025 by Steve Darling

That this House supports the protection of the rights of older people in the UK and globally; recognises that a UN Convention on the Rights of Older Persons is an important step for establishing a global minimum standard of legal protection for older people everywhere; acknowledges the strong track record of the UK in promoting and strengthening human rights internationally; believes that the decision of the Human Rights Council to draft a legally binding instrument on the rights of older persons is something the UK Government should openly support and engage with; understands that the meaningful participation of older people in the drafting of a Convention is a necessary prerequisite for its success; and, ahead of the commencement of the Intergovernmental Working Group tasked with drafting a human rights treaty for older persons, urges the Government to declare its support for this necessary process and the full involvement of older people.
