Early Day Motion 2300

Economic growth and the asylum system

Tabled 17 November 2025 by Olivia Blake

That this House welcomes the publication of the new report entitled Welcoming Growth: The Economic Case for a Fair and Humane Asylum System by the PCS trade union and Together for Refugees, based on research by the London School of Economics; further welcomes the proposals to process all asylum claims within six months, to provide legal assistance at all steps of the applications process and to provide migrants with English language and employment support from day one of their arrival; notes the findings that implementing these four changes would represent significant net financial savings to the taxpayer; and further notes the increased likelihood of refugees securing employment at an earlier stage, leading to higher salaries and tax contributions and reduced reliance on public services; and therefore calls on the Government to give full consideration to the implementation of that report’s proposals.
