That this House expresses its deep regret at the devastating impact of Hurricane Melissa on the people of Jamaica, The Bahamas, Cuba, Bermuda, Haiti, Dominican Republic, and Turks and Caicos Islands; expresses further sympathy for the various diaspora communities in the United Kingdom whose families and loved ones have been directly affected; notes with concern United Nations data stating that nearly 6 million people have been impacted; welcomes the Government’s decision to mobilise a £7.5 million financial support package to support the Caribbean region in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa; acknowledges the increasing risks posed by climate change and the growing frequency and severity of extreme weather events around the world; urges the Government to increase the scale and ambition of its international climate finance commitments in order to assist vulnerable nations mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change; and calls on the Government to engage with international partners to coordinate the immediate fulfilment of the World Food Programme’s $74 million appeal to deliver life-saving assistance to up to 1.1 million people across the Caribbean.
