Early Day Motion 310

Fifth anniversary of the Commission on Justice in Wales report

Tabled 24 October 2024 by Liz Saville Roberts

That this House commemorates the fifth anniversary of the publication of the Commission on Justice in Wales report, Justice in Wales for the People of Wales; recognises that the findings and recommendations of this extensive report, also known as the Thomas Commission report, continue to apply five years after publication; notes that among key recommendations of the report is the devolution of justice and policing to Wales, alongside the necessary funding; regrets that the Labour UK Government has refused to engage with these recommendations despite Welsh Government endorsement; acknowledges that Wales has its own distinct issues due to the jagged edge of the justice system in Wales; is concerned that recent data published by the Wales Governance Centre shows the scale of the crisis within prisons in Wales, primarily falling under UK Government jurisdiction; and calls on the UK Government to mark the anniversary of this important report by following the lead of their Welsh Labour colleagues and fully engaging with the report’s recommendations to devolve justice and policing to Wales.
